for boxcar theatre's 2006 play, 'zen'

Boxcar Theatre's "Zen".

Cast: Dana Lau, Sarah Mitchell, Lauren Pizzi, Ian Riley, Grove Wiley
and Jime Wurzbach.
Venue: The Magic Theater in San Francisco, California.
My Role: Songwriter/Composer
Zen was written and created by the Boxcar Theatre players (and Imagined and
Directed by Nick Olivero) and was performed both at Baker Beach and at the
Magic Theatre. The stages was a big Zen sandbox, with three tons of sand
carted in to the Magic and, well, the beach had sand already.
And all music posted here was used in the show at the Magic unless
noted otherwise.
Opening Theme and Variations
Opening Theme used in the opening of the play, End used at the end, and
other variations used as interstitial music throughout.

Waltz variations
This piece ended up needing to be simple and romantic, as two characters hug
and slowly dance, a man comforting a woman while she cries about a problem
they've discovered in their baby which she is carrying. However, I made a
more fully orchestrated version first, so I'm posting it as a point of
comparison.

"Rope" music
This piece was not used in the final play. It was originally intended to
underscore a tug-of-war that two characters had - battle music, sort of.
But the scene ended up not needing music.

"Child" music
Another character thinks she really wants to have a baby, and so this is
the sound that plays at one point while she is doing headstands and
trying to be playful (the long version) and another that flashes when
a child mistakenly calls her, "Mommy," and it tugs at her. There was
also a clock as a set piece, and so the sound reflects its presence,
both on stage and in her metaphorical/biological sense.

Airport Announcements
Used at one point in the play, when the expecting couple were in an airport.
